A dark wind blew up the street as Calvin sat in his van, waiting for Greta to get home. Since their confrontation the other night, he'd done some legwork and come up with some important information. The Linden Hills house, where Greta had been spending so much time, belonged to the same woman who owned the Lyme House restaurant on Lake Harriet. Her name was Lawless. Her father was a big-shot defense attorney in St. Paul. This Lawless woman had to be rolling in bucks because, not only did she own the Lyme House, but she was opening a new restaurant in Uptown.
Calvin had seen Greta taking photographs inside the old movie theater. He didn't know why she was doing it, but he intended to find out.
Late last night, Calvin had snuck into the Lyme House pub. By talking to some of the regulars, he'd learned that Lawless was a dyke. Apparently, she didn't even try to hide it.
He'd put it all together a few hours later, sitting in a downtown bar, smoking a butt and drinking a beer. The image of what was really going on inside that house hit him so hard, he had to run outside and puke his guts out in the alley. Greta hadn't left him for another guy. She'd left him for a woman.
The more he thought about it, the more the confusing parts of Greta's personality were beginning to make sense. She never wanted to take care of him — do his wash, cook, grocery shop, clean the apartment. As far as he could see, she didn't have a domestic bone in her body. On the other hand, she could look super hot, and she flirted like hell with guys every place they went. Maybe it was a cover. He'd never seen her flirt with a woman.
What had really bugged him was her absolute refusal to quit her job. She was so goddamn independent. It was all there to see, but he'd been blind to it because he loved her. She sure kept him happy in bed. And he wondered about that. That's when the thought occurred to him that maybe she wasn't a dyke. Maybe she was just weak, susceptible, too young and stupid to realize what was happening until Lawless got her hooks in her.
As Calvin sat in the darkness now, staring at Greta's apartment building, he was struck by a totally disgusting thought. What if part of Lawless's lure was to pay for Greta to go to art college? Greta had always talked about college like it was the holy fucking grail. What if she was selling herself sexually to this woman for a chance at some stupid dream? Except, if that's all it was, then maybe she was still salvageable.
Calvin decided that had to be it. If he could just get to her in time, talk some sense into her, make her remember how much she really did love him, well then, maybe she still had a chance at a normal life.
